Applications of simulation for nondestructive evaluation of materials

Simulation is today a widely accepted support to experimental studies in many industrial fields. It can either provide a quick and cost-efficient complement to round-robin experimental studies, or allow to explore a wider range in a parametric study, for instance. In the particular context of Artificial Intelligence, fast, accurate and representative simulation tools prove very useful to generate large datasets. This communication presents several applications of simulation tools dedicated to nondestructive testing applications. In order to take advantage of semi-analytical formalisms exploiting symmetries, the complete problem can be solved as a set of interacting subproblems. Once the problem of interest is solved in an efficient way, it can be simulated in many different situations in order to evaluate the sensitivity of the ECT measured quantity to influential parameters and quantify the performance of the inspection method, which can be done by means of uncertainty propagation. After an introduction of the coupled formalisms constituting the forward model, accelerating techniques and model based statistical studies will be presented.
